After the genocide in Rwanda, many girls and women were orphaned and widowed, suddenly finding themselves as heads of their families, solely responsible for their households and farms. At the Kopakama washing station, the female members formed a Women’s Committee to support each other through the challenges this brought. As part of this, they purchased a 1.5 hectare plot of land with 3,000 coffee trees as a training field and space to collaborate and build relationships through learning and working together. Women without access to their own property and land also come here to work. The women named the field Ejo Heza; ‘A Beautiful Tomorrow’. The best coffees from Ejo Heza and the female members’ own trees are sold and managed by a committee of five women with proceeds being reinvested in the group.
