On the volcanic shores of Lake Kivu in the Nyamasheke county of Rwanda, surrounded by rolling hills of coffee trees is the newly constructed Gitwe washing station. Bought by the Rwanda Trading Company, Gitwe washing station's speciality is producing fully washed, high-end speciality coffees. Located at such high altitudes and the natural disposition of fertile soil, regular rain and an abundance of Bourbon, Nyamasheke is one of the more concentrated coffee-growing regions of Rwanda renowned for the top quality lots. Smallholder-farmers typically organise themselves into cooperatives and benefit from the shared services of centralised wet-mills, or what they locally refer to as washing stations such as Gitwe. This year the washing station took in cherry from 800 surrounding farmers and expect a collective output of three containers. Making its debut into our shop, the growing success of Gitwe is imminent. With their harvest season running between March and July, we're thrilled to bring you Gitwe, fresh and well worthy of the spotlight.
