Producer VARIOUS SMALLHOLDERS
Altitude 1,890 MASL
In northern Burundi, only a few miles from the border with Rwanda and close to the Congo-Nile Crest, sits the Kayanza Province. Though coffee grows almost everywhere in Burundi we’ve really enjoyed the delicate, sweet floral hints you get from the more northern crops, this lot from the Kibingo wetmill being no exception. Kibingo was built around 1985 and serves as the collection point for 517 local small producers, who each have small plots of 1-2 hectares on average. The traditional variety grown here is Red Bourbon, and many farms have very old rootstock which can be a challenge when it comes to yields and disease resistance. Many farms struggled with upkeep during previous periods of political instability, but they are beginning to rejuvenate their coffee industry, and we’re thrilled to be able to support them.
