Nano Challa translates to “the area above”. Founded by 25 farmers from the town of Agaro in Jimma, the cooperative was established in 2004. Jimma’s long-standing association with low-grade coffee drove the producers to want to elevate themselves above the poor market value dictated by their region’s bad reputation. Hence the significance of their chosen name, Nano Challa. In 2010, the group turned to Technoserve to further enhance their network and facilitate growth. Apart from introducing agronomists and business mentors, Tecnoserve also offered technical assistance in constructing a wet mill. With the facilities to produce washed coffee, adding to their repertoire, Nano Challa soon grew to 400 members. Presently, renowned for being some of the best beans Jimma and Ethiopia have to offer, the producers of the Nano Challa Cooperative have managed to rise well above low-grade, commercial coffee into the top echelons of speciality.
