The family farm Finca Palestina came about in 1957 when Jose Domingo Perez purchased the 43 hectares for farming legumes and corn. In the 1970s coffee was introduced and now, a third-generation coffee farmer, Joel Daniel says coffee is in his blood. Always looking to improve his product, Joel heavily invests in soil health and plant breeding, an initiative that has served him well. In 2012 a devastating attack of leaf rust decimated his farm wiping out almost 70% of the coffee trees. As the plague continued to threaten farms across the region, they were able to revive the crop with more rust resistant trees, thanks to his experimental hybrids and stock seeds. With an increased focus on soil nutrition, the trees built stronger immune systems proving his dual approach to be a great success. Joel’s meticulous attention to quality is carried through from the farm to the drying beds. By picking the cherries at an optimal temperature and leaving them to dry at a stable 32 degrees on raised beds for increased air circulation, Joel achieves the sweetest, cleanest cup that merits more than a cheer!
