Another unique and exciting filter coffee from Ecuador, this one hints more towards a Kenyan with redcurrant jelly sweetness and delicate florals. Vitaliano Merino's passion shines through with moreish flavours and candy-sweetness reflected in the cup.

When Anette cupped Vitaliano Merino’s coffee in Ecuador last year, she instantly fell in love. The remarkable rich, juicy taste and berry notes with bright acidity reminded her more of a Kenyan coffee, very different to the typical flavour profile of Ecuador. With a fiery passion, Vitaliano’s eyes light up when he talks about his coffee, a quality that transcends the cup and makes our eyes light bright when we sip it. His love for his work is palpable, and at 70 years old, retiring is not on the cards. Instead, Vitaliano is working on turning his 7-hectare farm into a certified organic operation and planting sugar cane as a complementary crop. Winning his local quality competition, the Bracamoros Cup in 2017 has encouraged him to focus on speciality coffee, improve his environmental practices and lead the way in the critical task of reviving and preserving coffee as a vital crop for Ecuadorian exports.
