      A classic example of coffee from central Kenya, both in its cooperative infrastructure and flavour profile, the Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society was founded in 1954 and oversees several affiliated coffee factories, including Mitondo.

      The cooperative supports thousands of smallholder farmers, most of whom cultivate small plots, typically consisting of a few hundred coffee trees per household. Providing shared infrastructure and centralised processing, Mwirua FCS enables its members to access markets more effectively, and with ongoing investments in processing equipment and quality control, long-term returns are being established.

      In addition to coffee production, Mwirua Farmers’ Cooperative Society plays a vital role in supporting rural livelihoods. The cooperative promotes good agricultural practices, provides farmer training, and implements initiatives that strengthen community sustainability and resilience. By improving quality at the factory level and supporting its members at the farm level, Mwirua FCS helps secure the future of smallholder coffee farming in Kirinyaga.
